My name is Risa. I'm 23 years old and live in Boca Raton, Florida. I have battled with my weight since I was about 6 years old, and for the last couple years, I was finally winning the fight. But I slipped, gaining back 36lbs from my lowest weight in ages. Now I'm buckling down again to shed the weight so I can look on the outside the way I feel on the inside. But the road isn't always straight and smooth. For more information on my life-long weight loss journey, please view my first post here. This blog exists for me, to keep me on track and motivated. If you don't like personal posts or personal opinions, you took the wrong fork at Albuquerque!

The Myth: Marilyn Monroe was a size 12.
The Truth: While the truth is she was a size 12, people must understand that that was a VINTAGE 1950s size 12. In today’s modern sizing, that is closer to a size 2-4. At Marilyn’s heaviest, she wasn’t any bigger than a (modern) size 8. I personally don’t think she ever was bigger than a (modern) size 6.
The numeral size chart has changed over the years. With every passing decade the same amount of inches in the waist became a lower and lower numeral representation. This is often referred to as Vanity sizing. A 24 inch waist is the same today as the 24 inches in the 1950s. However today we refer to that as a size 0-2, depending on designer and in the 1950s, a 24 inch waist was a 10-12.
“But Marilyn looked curvier.” True, but this had to do with the different exercise and nutrition available back when. People exercised more in their daily routine than we do today. Also cardio exercises were more popular then than the core strengthening exercises of today. Nutrition was also different back then. All this creates different body types.Let’s also keep in mind that Marilyn was (I believe) 5’4”. A 24 inch waist and body type will look different on someone who is shorter than someone who is taller. As a general rule, people are a lot taller today than they were back when.
Marilyn is approximate a size (1960’s) 10-12 in this picture which is about a 4 by today’s sizing. (Since I do not know her actual measurements in this photo I am going by guesstimation and comparing it to vintage sizing charts.)
So when you hear the modern argument that Marilyn was a size 12, don’t mistake that as her being a plus sized lady. She never was.

I've gone over by like 50 grams of fat on myfitnesspal, but its all healthy and from nuts! I never usually do this, but today i had absolutely nothing to eat except them! Is this going to hurt my progress? Thank you lovely! X

Ultimately, no. Overeating or under-eating every once in a while won’t make a difference in your long run weight loss journey. However, it can hurt you for the time being. Not eating can affect your day’s blood sugar, energy levels, and digestion. Depending on other factors, it could affect your immune system. Definitely try not to let this happen even occasionally, but you will be okay today. Don’t panic.

Can you give any advice on shape wear? I love my body but I just want to fit into some old clothes without looking lumpy. My trouble is finding shape wear that actually fits me and allows me to breathe.

Afraid I can’t help you very much. I don’t use shape wear. My excess skin always makes the shape wear just roll down, no matter what kind or length or whatever I try to wear. For most people, though, I’ve heard great reviews about Spanx.

How does over eating effect weight loss?

An important post inspired by some of my people on here who get WAY too upset with themselves for the odd blow out on their meal plan.

Check it out.

What you can see here is a graph showing daily intake for a hypothetical weight loss client. As you can see, s/he is on track all week.. but there’s pizza on Saturday night resulting in exceeding maintenance calories that day.

What you can also see in the final “average intake for the week” column is that even this feast of delicious pizza has only put us just above our ideal maximum daily intake (on average) by about 26 calories, and we’re still WELL below maintenance for the week.

In other words, absolutely nothing to worry about.

It’s like I keep saying, all you need is to know your ideal “no less than this amount, no more than that amount” range of calories to support your goal weight. Then you just need to be “reasonably close, more often than not, on average” to those guidelines.

Unrealistically trying to force yourself to adhere to a plan any stricter than this is both pointless and counter productive, IMO, and you’ll be far more likely to overeat more often.

There’s a whole post on my main site you should read about this. Click the link above.

Now if you will excuse me, I have to go and make some pancakes. And ice cream.

What do you know about coffee? Or do you have any followers who do? I know to do my own research on these things, but I can't find a good answer. Some say coffee helps fat loss (0 cals, boosts metabolism, burns fat etc. But it can increase cortisol, appetite, etc. I love just a cup of straight black coffee in the morning, but I'm scared I'm not helping myself any. I'm also depressed, so it is really helpful for my low energy & moods. I just love coffee so much, I really don't want to give it up!

Just like anything else in this world, too much is a bad thing. But a cup in the morning of black coffee is perfectly fine. :) Check out this article from the Mayo Clinic about the coffee verdict. It should help you.
